Unit 15 Book

These are the layouts for my three double spreads in the Unit 15 Book for this year!

Un_Reel - Synopsis

The Un_Reel is an experimental short which focuses on Hyperreality and the way in which we perceive Architecture when created through photography, cinematography and image based representation . It explores the ways in which architecture, as a practice of visual consumption can manipulate, warp and enhance the way in which we imagine and absorb the cities we live in.

The film begins with a photographic portrayal of London where all seems in order. Little by little the cityscape begins to display traits of the uncanny whereby landmarks multiple, artifice is uncovered and the physical structure of London is questioned suggesting that London is actually fake, a construct that holds no relationship to authenticity.

The time comes where the conscience of Jed Wright is introduced and suggests that what has just been documented are the visions of London through his mind. As he explores deeper into his perception of built space it becomes clear that his visions are not of his own but of what he experiences through image representation of city life.

The progression of his state of conscience develops over the years into a state of complete synthetic existence where all matter is nurtured from his consumption of visual media in photographic and cinematographic formats.

Centrepoint Vista

The overall vista of London fromt he top of the newly extruded Centrepoint means that The Man now becomes aware that this phenomenon is not only something that he is experiencing. It is a concept of experiencing space which is city wide, if not worldwide. The towers are other versions of the cubicle spaces that are working away at delivering the various spaces required for all other users of each of those towers.

Initial Concept Visualization

These three shots are just an idea of what happens outside of the individual dwellings and imaginations. The overall cityscapes of actual London are dramatically changed as these towers spring up and litter the skyline. The towers are the physical spaces that contain the individual synthetic spaces. Within each tower there are multiple dwellings which all share the various synthetic fragments and representations of what used to be the built city of London.

20101202-Draft Edit

20101202-Draft Edit from Richard Young on Vimeo.

Moving on from the animatic, I began tests of the various shots, and started getting them down onto the timeline. The Opening sequence needs to be tighter and a little bit more punchy. All of the tighter street shots need animation of the various components that I have added to the shots to give the impression of a growing rate of construction in the stage set of London. The CG world sequence needs to be worked into a lot more and carry more weight in relation to the composition as a whole. I think the length is about right and that the sound can start to be developed a little more with more accuracy.

Stills of the London Stage

These stills are shots from the test below. I intend to work into the model alot more and build the idea that this version of London is very much so a stage set that aims to deceive the viewer or user of the space into believing that the space they inhabit is real when in actual fact it is completely developed out of artifice.

Animatic

Animatic from Richard Young on Vimeo.

This is the initial animatic that I have produced that has the same explanation as the storyboard previously posted.

London Delivery Service

This the idea I have in mind for the moving city of a collection of London Landmarks. The actual graphic on top of the montage is also a rough plan of the route through the film.

Landmark London

These are a few shots that I took as potential sites for the opening and 'locating' shots to happen. Aswel as the framing of these shots simply containing landmarks of London it is these landmarks that will form the components od cinematic London, its planning and its formation of impossible geographies.
